Why build an ENERGY STAR home?
Building ENERGY STAR homes is savvy risk management. The stringent requirements for ENERGY STAR labeled homes guarantee a
tighter envelope and reduce the risk of moisture movement problems. The ENERGY STAR label show consumers that you are concerned about the environment
and provide homes that will have lower energy bills. Furthermore, the ENERGY STAR label will make your home eligible for Energy Efficiency Mortgages
(Seems), the Texas Veteran Land Board (TV) new home program, as well as other special government financing.

The ENERGY STAR Home Program
The ENERGY STAR Home Program The ENERGY STAR Home Program was designed to allow flexibility in design and not limit the builder’s
options in utilizing innovative construction technologies.
Becoming an ENERGY STAR Certified Home begins with a detailed plan review and
energy analysis of the home. This analysis is used to determine a Home Energy Rating (HERS) Score. A home that meets the minimum HERS standards
receives a score of 80. ENERGY STAR Homes must achieve a HERS rating of 86 as well as score 15% greater than IDEC. On most homes there are five
major design factors that affect the HERS rating:
- Mechanical Equipment Size & Efficiency
- Duct Leakage
- Infiltration (construction tightness / air barrier effectiveness)
- Insulation Levels (thermal barrier, R-value of installation)
- Window Performance and Quantity
